We teared down all partitions and kept only load-bearing walls, thus opening up wider and brighter spaces, better suited to the needs of shared and working areas envisaged by the cooperative.
We chose not to set plaster ceilings, exposing the original beams and ceiling tiles instead, helping us cut the costs down, but also strenghtened the focus on the old structure of the building, now open to the eyes of its users and visitors.
The project evisaged the creation of new, smaller spaces, enclosed within the volume of the existing hall. The design is aimed at structuring these new spaces and, at the same time, keeping the view of the great Medieval stone arch.
The new material used in the design were chosen according to the requirements of the new activity and rare combined with the original features and textures of the place. The inner walls were designed with iron, wood and glass, in order to preserve the visual contact between the large space and the smaller units, and also the natural light coming from the street.
The center needed a common space, with plenty of room and light, intended as a meeting point and also to hold activities, events or seminars, to work or take a break, or simply as a waiting area. They also requested independent rooms visually linked to the common space. The continuum in the flooring echoes the continuity of the space, reinforced as well by the glass walls. Curtains were also added in order to have some privacy when needed. Thanks to the separation between the ceiling planks, natural light coming from the glazes area at the top can find its way in.
